Fasting Like a Ninja

Hello Parentz Express
Below is a brief summary, main verses and a few discussion questions you can use to reinforce what we're learning this Sunday. I hope this can be a meaningful tool for you to help your children apply what they learn in Kidz Express.

This week we are going to be discussing some of Jesus' instructions to us regarding fasting, prayer, and giving. His main point is "don't make it obvious... by trying to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire you for your fasting... But when you fast, shampoo your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you."
So when you fast, go into "ninja" mode, try not to get noticed by others because fasting is about humbling ourselves before God.

Verse:
Matthew 6:16-18
"And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. 17 But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. 18 Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you."

Discussion Questions:
  1. When you fast, why is it better that people not know that you are fasting?
  2. Does this mean if someone asks you, you should lie and say you are not?
  3. What happens if someone finds out you are fasting?
